Reading Interventions

We pride ourselves in Springwell Park for never letting a child fall behind. We work tirelessly to ensure that our children make progress and reach their full potential. For our children learning phonics (early reading), our children who are not on track and working at the stage that they should be, they receive additional intervention from the Reading Leader (for me information on phonics catch up, please refer to our phonics page).

At Springwell Park, we use 'Lexplore' to increase our understanding of our children's individual reading strengths and weaknesses. Lexplore is an analytical programme and offers us vital information on our children's ability. For more information on Lexplore, please click this link:

Our Class Teachers are able to use the results from Lexplore to plot the children onto the 'Simple View of Reading'. All staff, including TAs, have had training on this and are confident with its intent and impact.

Our Class Teachers use Lexplore results, as well as data (informed by teacher judgment and summative assessment) to plot the children onto the Simple View of Reading. We are then able to pinpoint the child's specific area of need.

  • The children in the top left quadrant have poor word recognition but good comprehension, so any targeted support they would have focuses on fluency and decoding.
  • The children in the top right quadrant have good fluency and good comprehension.
  • The children in the bottom left quadrant have poor fluency and poor comprehension.
  • The children in the bottom right quadrant have good fluency but poor comprehension, so these children would focus on an understanding of what has been read.

Targeted Reading

We use the Simple View of Reading to ascertain what area of need the children have. This means that, when they complete their targeted reading session, it is meaningful and matched to their weakness. All of the children who do not read at home are targeted readers, as well as the children who need additional support.
