PE at Springwell Park

In EYFS, we begin developing our PE skills and knowledge in the 'Physical Development' area of development. This learning is the foundation for our PE work when we start KS1.

At Springwell Park, we aim to provide a PE curriculum that provides pupils from EYFS to Year 6, not only enjoy but also allows them to experience a range of activities that help them to develop their health, fitness and wellbeing. We believe sport is essential to helping children lead a healthy and active life, increase concentration levels within class as well as developing a range of skills in a variety of sports. As a school we actively promote physical activity with the vision that our children will remain active throughout their lives.

We intend to offer a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physical activities. We provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which support their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

We provide all our children with the opportunity to take part in a range of sports and compete competitively against each other and other schools in a variety of sports in both KS1 and KS2.

We provide opportunities to inspire and encourage all children to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physical activities. We provide children to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness.

We follow the key National Curriculum aims when planning our PE lessons and ensure all children have a high quality physical education curriculum. Overall, children’s experience of the PE curriculum at Springwell Park is designed to:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time

  • Engage in competitive sports and activities

  • Lead healthy, active lives

Our sports provision is delivered by Little Sports Coaching. All lessons are delivered to a very high standard and are overseen by the PE co-ordinator. All children receive a broad and balanced PE curriculum. Every child will access the key areas of the subject, with clear progression of skills and knowledge across year groups.

The curriculum is further enhanced by participation in numerous sporting tournaments with other schools in the area and after school clubs. At Springwell Park we aspire for pupils to adopt a positive mind-set and believe that anything can be achieved with determination and resilience. Pupils are taught to observe and produce the conventions of fair play, honest competition and good sporting behaviours as individual participants, team members and spectators. PE is taught with typically children learning a different sport each half term, we focus on fundamental movement skills in KS1 and develop to skill-based sports in KS2. Each half term the children compete in their house teams across school which encourages the children to compete in and demonstrate the skills they have learnt.  Children can work independently, with a partner and collaborate with small or larger groups. They talk confidently against the success criteria, they can then select this knowledge to adapt the tactics to improve their game, sequence or activity.
